A gilt bronze frog weight
Han dynasty, 1st century BC - 1st century AD, China
Diameter: 7 cm, 2.8 inches
The frog weight is depicted on all fours as if about to jump, head held up and alert. Placed on a square base that rises like a hill under the chin of the frog, which is not connected below its body thus increasing the creature’s sculptural presence, the sides of the base engraved with a scrolling design of typical Han type.
